Gamers are loving a new video game that allows them to role play at being a cat in a futuristic universe – and as an added bonus, their furry friends are loving it too.

Owners from around the world have posted sweet videos of their moggies coming up to the screen while they’re playing Stray, fascinated by PlayStation game that was released yesterday on PS4 and PS5.

Gameplay involves a pet cat who has lost their way in a vast, grimy cityscape full of droids and dangerous creatures and is trying to find their way home.

Videos of cats watching the action unfold, clawing at the screen and one Japanese user’s pet meowing back at the feline in the game have amassed thousands of likes and views online.

One Twitter user said as her cat jumped up to defend the living room, saying: ‘I’m dying, he thought it was coming out of the screen!’

Another said ‘Stray 100/10 this is priceless’ as her pet clawed at its virtual adversary.

One person’s cat, was simply ‘transfixed’ and looked remarkably similar to the cat in the game.

People without cats are also raving about the game, which developers have pushed into a new dimension – with realistic graphics and beautiful landscapes to explore.

Stray is the debut adventure game from indie developer BlueTwelve Studio and publisher Annapurna Interactive.

Gamers quite literally step into the ginger paws of a stray cat, navigating challenges as they attempt to reunite with their lost owners.

The ginger tom, who has no superpowers to speak of and a drone as its only friend, interacts with robotic denizens in the true to life world, which has a Gotham-like feel to it.

One fan on social media said it was the ‘best game humankind has ever created’, while another added: “Stray was a beautiful game… incredibly art directed (that lighting!) Loved exploring its world.

“Congrats to Blue Twelve Studio! Can’t wait to see what’s next for them!”

According to the developer’s website, Stray gives gamers the chance to ‘see the world through the eyes of a cat and interact with the environment in playful ways’ and to ‘be stealthy, nimble, silly, and sometimes as annoying as possible’.

‘Lost, alone and separated from family, a stray cat must untangle an ancient mystery to escape a long-forgotten city.

‘Stray is a third-person cat adventure game set amidst the detailed, neon-lit alleys of a decaying cybercity and the murky environments of its seedy underbelly.

‘Roam surroundings high and low, defend against unforeseen threats and solve the mysteries of this unwelcoming place inhabited by curious droids and dangerous creatures.

‘See the world through the eyes of a cat and interact with the environment in playful ways. Be stealthy, nimble, silly, and sometimes as annoying as possible with the strange inhabitants of this mysterious world.

‘Along the way, the cat befriends a small flying drone, known only as B-12. With the help of this newfound companion, the duo must find a way out.

‘Stray is developed by BlueTwelve Studio, a small team from the south of France mostly made up of cats and a handful of humans.’

Stray is a timed exclusive for PlayStation consoles currently, which means exclusivity could last from three months to a year, though the latter timeframe is the most likely.

It’s likely Xbox users who want to play the game will have to wait until 2023 at the earliest.
