A stowaway cat from Lincolnshire joined a couple on holiday in south Devon.

Janet and Paul Atkinson from Horncastle, Lincolnshire, said the black and white cat had hidden in their caravan and only appeared after they returned from dinner on their first night.

The cat was looked after by an animal charity before rejoining the couple for the return trip home.

Ms Atkinson said she “recognised the cat straight away” as being from their village.

She shared a photo of the cat on an online community group and discovered “the cat, called Bonnie, belonged to our neighbour Stephanie”.

The couple said the charity Animals in Distress took Bonnie in for the week after local boarding catteries would not as his vaccinations were not up to date.

Ms Atkinson said Bonnie was well looked after, and it was “a nice outcome to what could have been a very stressful situation for us”.

The couple and their furry stowaway travelled about 300 miles (480km) to south Devon and he joined them in the car for the return journey.

Lisa Saunders, cattery manager at Animals in Distress, said Bonnie spent “a lovely week in his luxury pen in our cattery, being spoilt by the team”.

Owner Stephanie said she believed Bonnie had “enjoyed the peace and quiet away from the dogs”.

She said: “He’s been on his holidays, even though we haven’t.

“He has settled right back in, and we are just so glad to have got him back.”
