Manchester is great for both our Christmas Markets and dog-friendly places to eat, drink and chill – so what happens when we combine the two?

With so many people looking to take their dogs to the Christmas markets, holiday letting agents Canine Cottages sought to find the most dog-friendly markets across the UK – with Manchester coming in at number two.

Canine Cottages took to TripAdvisor to analyse reviews based on dog-related terms to compile a list of the most dog friendly Christmas markets in the UK, the top three of which are below – note the northernness:

  1. Edinburgh Christmas Market
  2. Manchester Christmas Market
  3. Sheffield Christmas Market

Whilst the Christmas markets always make for an enjoyable, festive day out for us humans, it can sometimes be an overwhelming experience for our dogs. This doesn’t mean that you should miss out on the festivities; however not every dog is comfortable in such bustling environments and it’s always best to assess whether the situation is appropriate for your dog.

To help you keep your dog safe and happy whilst you’re out at the markets this year, Canine Cottages has teamed up with Clinical Animal Behaviourist Rachel Rodgers MSc.

Rachel has shared her top tips and advice in response, including preparing your pooch for busy places such as Christmas markets with lots of new people, dogs, smells and noises; using the right equipment such as a shorter lead and properly fitted harness, giving you more control; knowing when your pup is comfortable and understanding their body language; and paying attention to potential dangers including toxic substances like alcohol, chocolate and onions.

You should also be aware of grit on the streets whilst you’re out and about, Rachel adds: “While this is obviously helpful to stop up slipping on the ice, it’s dangerous to dogs. Make sure you wash their paws when you get back from your trip so that there’s no chance of them licking the grit.”

So, if you fancy taking your furry friend out to the Manchester Christmas Markets, it’s one of the best, but always take care in crowded areas.
