The PDSA unleashed its Paw Animal Wellbeing Report of 2024 and, in it, reveals the top five most popular dog breeds of this year.
With over half of the UK population owning a pet (51 percent), many are likely to have a dog as a companion.
There are 10.6 million pet dogs in the UK, but which breed is the most popular? In a surprising revelation, PDSA veterinary nurse Gemma Renwick explained that the most common type of dog is actually the crossbreed.
“They may not be a ‘breed’ in the traditional sense, but crossbreeds are still the most popular choice for dog owners in the UK,” said vet nurse Gemma, and for good reason.
“Crossbreeds are generally considered healthier than pedigree dogs,” Gemma explained, pointing out the potential health issues associated with inbreeding in purebred dogs.
However, she noted that the specific breeds that make up a crossbreed can still influence the health of the dog.
“When considering adding a Crossbreed to your life, it’s important to make sure both parents are healthy,” advised Gemma.
“Be sure to look for a breeder who provides health testing for the parents for any specific breed health concerns.”
The second most popular dog breed in 2024 is the Labrador Retriever, known for their tendency to eat “anything and everything.”
Gemma explained, “Labradors are typically sociable, fun-loving, devoted, and affectionate family dogs, but they are also commonly used as working dogs.”
“Having originally been bred as Gundogs, they require a good amount of exercise, scent work, and mental stimulation to remain happy and healthy.”
Any Lab owners should be aware of the most common health conditions that could affect their pet; these include: joint issues, arthritis and deteriorating eyesight.
In third place for the most popular dog breed of 2024 is the Cockapoo, which has steadily gained popularity in recent years. “Cockapoos are typically loving, intelligent, and high-energy,” said Gemma, though she noted that their grooming needs should be taken into account.
“While their coat type can vary, Cockapoos are often prone to tangles and mats, so they will require regular grooming,” Gemma explained.
In fourth place is the German Shepherd, known for being “intelligent and easy to train,” making them excellent family pets. And in fifth place is the English Cocker Spaniel, which is “lively” and “loves to play.”
