When a cat poops in your garden, they’re marking their territory and will likely return to do it again.

Cats pooping in gardens can be a menace and can wreak havoc on flower beds, crops and borders.

While cat faeces in a few beds and borders may not seem like much of a problem, cats are carnivores which means their faeces contain parasites.

Cat poop can cause toxoplasmosis and cryptosporidiosis which can cause nasty symptoms.

Toxoplasmosis symptoms include headaches, fever, muscle aches and pains and swollen lymph glands, especially around the neck.

Meanwhile, cryptosporidiosis can cause diarrhoea, vomiting, fever, and a host of other problems.

Signs a cat has been in your garden include holes in the flower beds, small mounds of soil and paw prints.

Deterring cats from gardens can be difficult but there is a plethora of natural methods out there.

Carlos Garcia, son of the founders of Total Clean, has shared how to stop cats from pooping in gardens.

He exclusively told Express.co.uk: “Cats can be discouraged from using your garden as a litter box by placing rough materials like pinecones or chicken wire on the soil’s surface.

“You can also plant strong-smelling herbs like rosemary or lavender, as cats dislike the scents.

“Motion-activated sprinklers are also a great way to startle cats away from the area.”

Crushed-up eggshells in soil can feel unappealing under a cat’s paws and will keep other pests like slugs away from plants too.

Creating a natural barrier with branches and twigs between plants will also deter them.

Cats like nothing more than freshly turned over, soft soil so ensuring soil is hard and uncomfortable should keep cats at bay.
