Declawing is a cruel and inhumane practice banned in the UK, and many owners who do it don’t understand what it’s actually like for their pet.
An expert has recently taken to TikTok to highlight how declawing a cat is “far more invasive than most people realize,” by drawing a striking comparison to human anatomy.
Dr. Dana, known for sharing lesser-known medical insights online, made a startling comparison: “Declawing a cat is equivalent to amputating all your toes,” which is a truly unsettling analogy.
The Anti-cruelty Society warn: “This surgical process can be very painful for your cat and could permanently alter your cat’s behaviour.
“Declawing your cat is not a necessary procedure. There are ways to live peacefully with your cat and her claws, as scratching is a natural and essential behavior for her.”
Dana then detailed what the procedure involves, leaving some people horrified. “Essentially, they cut the ligaments and tendons to entirely remove the distal phalanx along with the claws,” she explained.
She noted that this process can be “extremely painful and uncomfortable for the cat.” “Afterward, they may even experience issues with mobility and balance,” she added.
Additionally, there can be “other long-term health consequences,” which she believes is unfair to your cat.
She expressed that it was “so sad” that people choose to have their cats declawed, noting that when you adopt a cat, you should understand that their claws are an essential part of who they are.
The comments section was filled with outrage. One commenter wrote: “I had no idea this was the case. It’s so heartbreaking. Why is this even an option?”
Another commenter shared: “This breaks my heart, and it’s absolutely true. Our Blaze was declawed by her previous owners, and it caused so many problems. We miss her dearly.”
One person expressed frustration, saying: “If you can’t handle a cat because of their claws, then you shouldn’t have a cat. It’s that simple.”
A TikToker admitted, “I had no idea it was this severe.”
