Man’s best friend… is all down to puppy postcode.

With its cute eyes and caramel-coloured coat, the goldendoodle has been crowned the UK’s most popular dog breed for the second year running.

But a study of Britain’s most popular dog breeds shows your favourites will be as much about where you live as how affectionate the pups are. Boxers are number one in Nottingham while Liverpudlians favour whippets.

However, poodle crosses occupied four of the top seven spots nationwide, with goldendoodles coming first, just like last year. The poodle-golden retriever cross beat golden retrievers and maltipoos, a Maltese and toy poodle cross, to top dog.

And a separate study has revealed how different dog breeds attract different types of owners.

Golden retrievers, the second most popular dog, appeal to people who are emotionally stable, positive and happy. Owners of whippets, which came sixth in the top 10, seek new experiences, have lots of hobbies and enjoy taking risks.

Meanwhile, poodle owners, which account for four of the top seven most popular dogs, are sincere, fun-loving and loyal.

Analysis of more than two million weekly visits to online marketplace Pets4Homes in the past year also found differences in the popularity of the top 10 breeds in England’s cities:

Goldendoodles were the most sought after in London, Manchester, Stoke-on-Trent and Leicester – but only the 9th most popular in Birmingham.
Maltipoos came top in Birmingham and Doncaster, they were only 10th in Manchester.
Dobermans were the most popular in Sheffield, but only 10th in Stoke-On-Trent.
Labradoodles (a Labrador-poodle cross) came top in Bradford but 10th in Liverpool.
Whippets were the most sought-after in Liverpool but 9th in Doncaster and Leicester.
Boxers came top in Nottingham, but only 10th in Doncaster.

Golden retrievers came second in the nationwide results by being popular in most areas, but were never top choice in any of the 10 cities.

The data also showed puppy prices have started to rise following a two-year post-pandemic decline. English bulldogs were the most expensive breed, selling for £1,704 on average.

Axel Lagercrantz, CEO of Pets4Home, said: “Prices are starting to rise for the first time since 2021, after reaching a peak during lockdown.”

Previous studies have revealed how different dog breeds attract owners with certain personality traits.

Golden retrievers, the second most popular dog in the UK, appeal to people who are emotionally stable, positive and happy.

Owners of whippets, which came sixth in the top 10 of sought after breeds, enjoy new experiences, have lots of hobbies and enjoy taking risks.

Poodle owners, which account for four of the top seven most popular dogs, are sincere, fun-loving and loyal.

The appeal of goldendoodles, which topped the list, can be explained by poodles being the second most naturally intelligent breed after border collies, with golden retrievers fourth.

Boxer owners are busy, love life, and quickly welcome strangers as new friends, while dobermans attract people who are highly organised and goal driven.
