Kiki, a loving and loyal Scottish cat, never skips a school day.
Each morning, no matter how sleepy she is, Kiki somehow senses when her 10-year-old housemate, Sonny, is preparing for school.
Like clockwork, the spotted white cat joins Sonny and his classmates on their walk to school in Glasgow, Scotland. She spends the day waiting on the playground and then escorts the children home when school is over.
Kiki’s unwavering routine has earned her the role of unofficial school mascot. One head teacher even praised the devoted feline for her “100% attendance record.” Now, Kiki is a nominee for a UK National Cat Award.
“She’s brought so much happiness to the children, staff, and the whole school community,” said Kiki’s owner, 51-year-old Michelle Scott. “She’s also given teachers a chance to show kids how to treat and respect animals.”
Sonny picked Kiki from a litter as a gift for his eighth birthday—and their connection quickly turned into a deep bond.
Soon, that affection spread to his friends, his classmates, and eventually the entire school community in south Glasgow.
Sonny’s mom added, “I’ve had cats all my life, but Kiki is unlike any I’ve known. She’s incredibly sociable. Whenever Sonny had friends over, she’d sit right beside them, like one of the gang.”
Kiki’s strong social bonds and positive impact on her community have earned her a spot as one of three finalists in the Connected Cats category of the National Cat Awards. The competition is run by Cats Protection, the UK’s largest feline welfare charity.
Last year’s top honor went to Marley, a black and white cat recognized for his role as a support animal in a safe haven for victims of crime.
The public can cast their votes for Kiki—and other finalists—on the competition’s website until July 31. Category winners will be revealed on September 24, when a panel of judges will also name the overall National Cat of the Year 2025.
And perhaps that title will go to the cat who never misses a school day.
