The UK’s most popular breeds of dog have been revealed as pet ownership surged during the pandemic.

Data from The Kennel Club, which tracks new registrations in the UK each year, shows that almost 40,000 dogs were registered in 2020.

The most popular breeds saw a huge surge in demand during the coronavirus lockdowns, with registrations for the most sought-after up by almost 20 percent on their 2019 figure.

Experts from pet insurance provider Protectivity have crunched last year’s figures from The Kennel Club to reveal which breeds were the most in-demand.

The findings show that some of the most popular breeds are also amongst the most expensive.

The English Bulldog topped the chart of most expensive breeds in 2020, with a puppy costing £2,995 on average. Registrations for Bulldogs went up by almost 17% last year with 11,594 finding a home.

A survey carried out by Protectivity suggests that as many as 11% of people in Wales bought a new pet during lockdown and many are worried about leaving them at home alone when they return to the office.

It’s worth remembering that owning a dog can be an expensive business with food, vet bills, and grooming costs all mounting up – so it’s a good idea to weigh all of this up before deciding to buy a new puppy.
