Jenny Green and her Westie Ernie diff out some of the best pet-friendly holiday escapes in the UK – and find several to their licking…
Pets are part of the family and, as a nation of animal lovers, us Brits love holidaying with our dogs.
Since 2017, my Westie Ernie and I have been sniffing out the UK’s best pet-friendly places to stay.
And, as well as self-catering accommodation, there are plenty of hotels and B&Bs where your four-legged friend will receive five-star service.
Here are a few of our “furvourites”.
1. St Anne’s House B&B, Sutton Bonington, Nott
You know you’re on to a winner when you find a dog-friendly B&B where the owners’ surname is ‘Bone’ – and this place, near Nottingham, is a real gem.
The Georgian house has a luxurious yet homely feel and lovely little touches, such as open fires and decanters of port.
Nowhere is off limit for dogs, who will have their own bed and welcome pack waiting, and resident Westie Hamish will be on hand to help them settle in.
Be sure to come hungry – breakfast is enormous and evening meals are also available on request.
Rooms start from £85 per night and dogs stay free. See stanneshouse.co.uk.
2. The Hampshire Hog, Clanfield
Dogs and their owners are guaranteed a warm welcome at this Fuller’s pub, just outside Portsmouth.
From the front, you’d never guess there is a stylish hotel tucked round the back, but there is, and dogs are welcome to stay for just £10 per night.
There’s a big jar of treats by the door, a lovely pub garden with views of the surrounding hills and ‘0% dog beer’ on draught.
A country park is just up the road, too – perfect for working off all those calories from the traditional pub grub.
Rooms start from £79. See thehampshirehog.co.uk.
3. Southern B&B, Brundall, Norfolk
If you like the idea of booking a hotel or B&B but prefer the space and freedom of self-catering, try staying here.
You’ll have the run of the downstairs of the house, aside from the kitchen – where the owners will happily whip up a Full English or four-course feast and serve it in your private dining room.
Resident Spaniel Lily will happily show visiting dogs around the garden and you will also have Norwich and the Norfolk Broads on your doorstep.
Overnight stays start from £59. Find Southern B&B on Booking.com.
4. Trigony House Hotel, Scotland
This relaxed country house hotel is renowned for being dog-friendly and as such, almost all guests arrive with a four-legged friend in tow.
It has beautiful manicured gardens and a lovely spa, which is a great place to destress.
You can even pamper your pooch with a dog reiki session (well worth it, in case you’re wondering!)
The seasonal food served in the restaurant is all locally-sourced and resident dogs Roxy, Parrot and Lola are always up for making new friends.
Rooms start from £120, and there’s an extra £9.50 charge per dog. Visit trigonyhotel.co.uk.
5. Karma St Martin’s, Isles of Scilly
You don’t have to go to the Caribbean for sparkling white sands – just head to the Isles of Scilly, off the coast of Cornwall.
Both dogs and humans will be in heaven at Karma St Martin’s, a luxury resort just steps from the beach.
As part of the hotel’s Very Important Pet scheme, dogs are welcomed with treats, blankets and bowls and you can also book dogsitters and order meals from Karma’s Kanine Kitchen.
The Scillies are accessible by sea and air and both options are dog-friendly. Rooms start from £150 and dogs cost £10 per night.
